May fly hatch The "big " hatch occurred sometime between 7pm Monday and 8am Tuesday. I got off water mon back on tue between that time the big hatch with the largest type of may flies occurred which was evidenced by their remains on the surface. How did it effect the fishing? Other then the mayflies we were greeted by completely flat water and hot sunny skies a double wammy. I was fishing with father and two young sons we had enough bites and fish to hold their interest, we were fishing catch and release for smallmouths. Our first spot after lunch we found what we were looking for a school of hungry smallmouths, I lost count but we caught a lot of fish in the course of the day we caught perch and 4 walleyes 3-14"-16" all released. It looks like what I thought were the worst possible conditions didn't shut down the bite it is prime fishing season. You just have to keep pounding away and hopefully find the fish your're looking for. |
